Paper photos soon to be invalid – ePassport photo requirement active since May 2025
Deadline Approaching: Digital Passport Photos Mandatory for German ID Cards from August 2025 Important notice for citizens in Germany: A key transitional regulation for German ID card and passport applications is ending soon. Starting August 1, 2025, only digital passport photos will be accepted for newly issued identification documents. The final day to submit a paper photo is July 31, 2025. What is changing? Traditional paper passport photos from photo booths or studios will no longer be valid. All ID and passport photos must be taken digitally and securely transmitted directly to the local Bürgeramt (citizens’ registration office) through an encrypted system. This aims to enhance document security and prevent photo manipulation through morphing techniques. Where can I get a digital passport photo? Good to know Already issued ID cards and passports remain valid until their expiration date. The new regulation only applies to applications submitted from August 1, 2025 onward. If you still prefer to use a traditional photo, act now — the deadline is fast approaching. Avoid delays and ensure compliance with the upcoming digital photo requirement.
